Location
Chinatown, Los Angeles
Located at the Jia Apartments, the modern "gateway" to Los Angeles’ Chinatown, this monumental installation by artist Emilio Perez serves as a vibrant cultural and architectural landmark.
Spanning the entire six-story height of the complex, the work is a site-specific commission crafted from painted aluminum. Its presence anchors the intersection, providing a vertical narrative that bridges the neighborhood's rich history with its contemporary future.
Cultural Homage
The palette was meticulously selected to honor the foundational values of Chinese culture:
Red: Representing happiness, success, and vitality.
Yellow: Signifying royalty, prosperity, and power.
Green: Symbolizing health, harmony, and growth.
A Living Installation
While the aluminum structure is striking by day, the work undergoes a dramatic transformation after sunset. Integrated lighting allows the piece to illuminate in the evening, transitioning through a spectrum of colors. This kinetic quality ensures the artwork remains a dynamic, pulse-like presence, reflecting the constant energy of Chinatown.
