The WELL - 705 Mount Auburn

Location

Mt Auburn, MA

The WELL, a life-science complex outside of Boston, MA, developed by Spear Street Capital, is designed to support technology, innovation, biotech and life sciences research, and the decision to include a major art component in the project expresses the WELL’s belief in creative solutions that cross-pollinate between all disciplines. Art Consultant Emily Santangelo tapped the talent of LA Artist Kysa Johnson to bring the project to life.

For the three major mural components, Emily Santangelo knew that artist Kysa Johnson's work would embody that vision. Johnson’s images of space, flowers, and sea grass all rendered from the common language of particle decay patterns, demonstrate the continuity between the microscopic and macroscopic scales of existence and the stunning complexity that can arise from a smaller set of interacting elements. Each mural focus’s on a different system essential for life on earth - Space, Flora and the Sea. “Starlight from our own star, the sun,” Johnson reflects, “is turned into food by flowers, sea grass, and all other plants to form the atmosphere and the food chain’s base, thus enabling life.” These monumental murals are visible from the WELL’s interior common spaces and exterior campus, allowing all attendees to be inspired by their beauty while drawing a connection between innovation and the solving of today’s scientific obstacles.
